
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Alex Pertout is recognised as one of Australia's leading percussionists and with credits on hundreds of albums, soundtracks and jingles is undeniably one of Australia's most recorded musicians. His playing has graced number one charting singles and albums and many award winning recordings. He has also attained credits with television and theatre orchestras, in countless live performances, as a multi-instrumentalist/composer and record producer, as an improviser, as an author and as a respected educator. Born in Santiago, Chile, he lived in Italy before settling in Australia in 1972, where he graduated from the Victorian College of the Arts with Distinction in performance in 1983. Alex has toured Europe, North America, Asia and Oceania as a founding member of the Australian Art Orchestra led by Paul Grabowsky, has performed as a soloist with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, has recording, performance and television orchestra credits with artists such as Powderfinger, Brazilian guitarist Badi Assad, Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, James Morrison, Paul Kelly, Archie Roach, Japanese fusion band Casiopea, Little River Band w/John Farnham, Hunters & Collectors, The Commodores, Daryl Braithwaite, Tina Arena and Archie Roach among many others.
His percussive work can also be heard on numerous motion picture and television soundtracks includingIt Runs In The Family, Empire Falls, Crocodile Dundee, Siam Sunset, The Goddess Of 1967, Black & White, The Craic, Diana & Me, Simone De Beauvoir's Babies, Shiner, Witch Hunt, Gross Misconduct, Aladdin: The Return Of Jafar, La Spagnola to name a few. In the theatre he was part of the orchestra for the productions of HMS Pinafore with Paul Eddigton, Me & My Girl and was a featured percussionist in a year-long season of The Lion King at the Regent Theatre. He has produced and released recordings as a multi-instrumentalist and composer, is the author of Sight Reading: The Rhythm Book released worldwide by US publishers Mel Bay, and is endorsed internationally by Meinl percussion, Sabian cymbals and Vater sticks.
Alex holds a Master of Philosophy in Music degree from the Australian National University and is a Senior Lecturer and Convenor of Contemporary Music Performance [Improvisation] at the Faculty of the Victorian College of the Arts and Music, The University of Melbourne, Australia. His latest release From The Heart featuring among others Mike Stern, Tom Coster, Tommy Emmanuel, Raul Rekow and Mark Levine is out now internationally through Nicolosi Productions-Sony (Italy) and available worlwide.
